The Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) simplifies the downloading and installation of Oracle Database products, including all necessary patches and updates. It enables processes such as: - Managing patching and updating for both new and existing Oracle Database installations. This includes the ability to download patches from My Oracle Support (MOS), apply them to a clean installation or an established database, then roll back if needed. This allows users to get patches without re-installing their database software. - Incremental patching and updating for Linux and Solaris systems with different kernels by linking up files in Patching Central rather than downloading binary updated packages. This allows for minimal downtime. - Automated installation of the Oracle Database 11g R2 release on Linux distributions with compiler-generated binaries. Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) now supports Oracle Solaris 10, Apple Mac OS X 10.6, Apple Mac OS X 10.5, Apple Mac OS X 10.4, Apple Mac OS 9 and Windows Vista. OUI makes it easy to install the latest technologies in your database environment - automatically installing patches without downtime or additional scripting required. For example, users can just point their browser to My Oracle Support (MOS) and download the latest patches needed to update their systems without re-installing their databases. The Oracle Universal Installer is now supported on Linux distributions with different kernels, including Solaris 10, Mac OS X 10.6, Mac OS X 10.5 and Mac OS 9. It has also been updated to support Oracle Database 11g Standard Edition Release 2 on Windows Vista. On the 11gR2 patch level, OUI can install patches without any downtime for Linux environments by using the "link files" approach described in the Patching Central page of this article. This procedure can be easily automated via a script or via invoking an Oracle-provided web application that handles the automation tasks for you. The web application allows the customer to follow along as the scripts install and apply patches, without having to edit a file directly. OUI Administration Guides are available for each release of Oracle Universal Installer. These guides explain how to set up your environment for patching and installation, as well as how to automate the tasks involved in deploying updates. There is also a tutorial that walks you through the process of starting OUI from a browser as well as using an interface that is specific to Mac OS X. In addition, there is now a separate guide for those installing 11gR2 on Windows Vista. The Administration Guides are available in PDF format.
